Varna Archaeological Museum

The Varna Archaeological Museum is a historical and archaeological museum located in the city of Varna, Bulgaria. The museum is one of the largest in the country, hosting over 55,000 exhibitions dating from the Paleolithic to the Middle Ages. It’s also known as one of the best developed cultural and scientific centres in Varna.

The Archaeological Museum is situated in a beautiful building, designed in the Neo-Renaissance style by architecture Petko Momchilov and built in 1892-1898 for the Varna Girls’ School. The building was first named “Maria Luiza” which in 1945 was renamed to “D-r Petar Beron”. Nine years later, the Varna Girls’ School became a school for both girls and boys.

The very first archaeological exhibits were collected by Karel Shkorpil and Ananie Iavashov in 1887. In the same year, using all of the collected items, they held a museum in the city library. Four years later they were forced by the Ministry of Education to send the museum exhibits to Sofia for establishing a new national museum. In 1895 Karel Shkorpil held another museum collection in the Girls’ School. The first museum exposition was opened on June 11, 1906.

The Varna Archaeological Museum became a national museum in 1945.

The Museum is a two-floor building, featuring 2150 sq ft of exhibition space, a large inner courtyard, storehouses, as well as a library, an Educational Children’s Museum, a gift shop and a cafeteria.

The Archaeological Museum has very unique and extremely valuable displays from the time of the ancient Thracian Culture, the Ancient Greek and Ancient Roman periods of the region’s history. The museum also has amazing works of Slavic and Proto-Bulgarian ceramics along with the ornaments from the Middle Ages and a very rich collection of sepulchral reliefs and sacred images.

The most famous and interesting museum exhibit is the Gold of Varna, the oldest gold treasure in the world dating to an incredible 4600 to 4200 years BC. It was excavated in 1972 during construction work near the city. It contains about 2000 golden items, including necklaces, bracelets, breast ornaments and vessels. One of the greatest displays of the collection is the golden sceptre-symbol of power of the monarch. Another amazing display is the skeleton of a forty to fifty year old man who is covered with more than 100 pieces of golden jewellery. The whole exhibit occupies three separate exhibition halls.

The Archaeological Museum and its remarkable collections represent Bulgaria through many national and international exhibitions. Museum exhibitions have been established at many famous museums in France, Germany, Japan, Israel, Italy, Spain and Portugal.

Visiting the Museum

The Varna Archaeological Museum is open in the summer from 10am to 5pm, Tuesdays to Sundays and in the winter from 10am to 5pm, Tuesdays to Saturdays.

The Parthenon - Athens

The Parthenon is found in the city of Athens and is a temple for the worship of the Greek Goddess Athena. The Parthenon is found high above the city and is situated on the Acropolis of Athens.

The name Parthenon is of unknown origin but the belief is that it actually means “The virgins place” or “The temple of the Virgin Goddess” and referred to a particular room in the structure rather than the whole building itself.

The Parthenon was built in the fifth century and sits on the site of an older Parthenon that was destroyed by Persians who tried to invade Greece around four hundred and eighty BC.

The building of the Parthenon was completed in a special way that every block has its individual shape. The idea was that from a distance the Parthenon would not look straight and symmetrical because of optical illusion so to combat this, the building was not built straight so from a distance the optical illusion would make it so.

As well as being a temple the Parthenon also served as a treasury, this was until the 6th century when it was converted into a Christian church for the Virgin Mary.

Later on in history when the Ottoman Turk Empire completed their conquest of Greece the Parthenon was converted to a Mosque and an Islamic Minaret was added.

After around two hundred years in the late seventeenth century the Parthenon was severely damaged when Ottoman ammunition being held in the Parthenon because of bombardment from the Venetians were ignited by the bombardment damaging a lot of the structure.

In 1832 when Greece became independent from the Ottoman Empire they Greeks tore down the Minaret and then became a historic monument to the great past of the Athenian Empire.

Today the Parthenon enjoys millions of tourists coming to bask in the glory and architecture of this amazing structure.

Tourists enjoy basking in the historic wonder of the Parthenon by taking the long and slow walk up the Panathenaic Way.

If you are visiting Athens then a visit to the Parthenon is a must as this building is a major part of what has made the city what it is today.

Hunyad Castle – Hunedoara

Found in the Transylvanian city of Hunedoara, Romania is the Hunyad Castle.

The Hunyad Castle was built around the thirteenth to fourteenth century and is most well known for being an important relic from the Hunyadi dynasty who was given the castle by Sigismund king of Hungary in the fourteenth century.

During the period of 1446 and 1453 the castle was given a much needed restoration by John Hunyadi, the grandson of John Hunyadi who was the first Hunyadi to own the property.

Over the years under the Hunyadi dynasty the castle grew as it was seen as an important and integral part to the families reign as rulers.

The building was initially built in a Gothic style but the restoration and additions the castle saw over time also gives it the architectural elements of both the Renaissance and Baroque styles.

The castle is made up of tall towers with spires and high defensive walls. There is a draw bridge at the front leading into a central courtyard. There is also a watch tower inside the courtyard with a secondary smaller bridge over the defensive trench and a keep as a last line of defense.

The Hunyard Castle also has a chapel and thirty metre deep well. The well has an interesting story whereby it was dug by twelve Turkish prisoners who were told that if they dug down to water they would be given freedom in return. These unfortunate souls took fifteen years to dig the well but their freedom was never given by their captors.

Inside the castle there are great halls and galleries. One of the most important halls in the building is the awe inspiring Knights’ hall.

Legend tells us that Vlad III of Wallachia who is today known as Vlad the Impaler or Dracula spent seven years in the Hunyad Castle as a prisoner between 1462 and 1469 after being deposed from his reign as a Wallachian Voivode.

Asakusa Shrine - Tokyo

The Asakusa Shrine, also known under a different name Sanja-sama which translates at the Shrine of the three Gods, is found in the huge city of Tokyo in Japan.

The Asakusa Shrine is a famous Shinto Shrine and was built to honour three men who were the founding fathers of the Senso-ji. These three men are Hinokuma Hamanari, Hinokuma Takenari and Hajino Matsuchi. These men are worshipped as deities at the shrine.

The legend of these men is that Hinokuma Takenari and Hinokuma Hamanari found a Kannon statuette of a Goddess of Mercy while trawling for fish with their fishing nets. A rich landlord found out about the find and delivered a sermon on Buddhism that encapsulated the two fishermen so much they converted to Bhuddism.

The Shrine is located in an area that is abundant in shrines built in honour of different people but this shrine is one of the most famous out of all the shrines in the vicinity.

The Asakusa Shrine was built in 1649 after being commissioned by Tokugawa Lemitsu and is of the Gongen style of shrine architecture.

During special times of the year there are many festivals held at the shrine by Shinto and Buddhists, the most famous of which is the Sanja Matsuri. The Sanja Matsuri is a wonderful festival to witness and can be seen annually in late May.

Today many people come to the Asakusa shrine to worship or simply bask in its history and wonderful architecture. Many tourists feel this shrine is one of the best monuments to Japans past in this area of Tokyo.

The shrine can be located via the underground system, to get there take the Ginza Line to Asakusa (exit 1) or the Toei Asakusa Line to Asakusa (exit A5).

Planty Park – Krakow

Planty Park is situated in the heart of Krakow around the old town district (stare Miasto) and is a major park in the city.

The park is actually a hub of historic importance in the city because most historic attractions are located within the belt of the park and along the Droga Królewska (Royal Road). Just one walk around the parks borders will throw you into the path of so many historic monuments and buildings that you are sure to be kept busy for a long time.

The park itself is fifty two acres in size that has been split down in to thirty smaller gardens showing different cultivated plants and decorated in varying styles. The park is also home to many statues, ponds and fountains which lend to the grandour and enjoyment of the park.

At the northern end of the park you can enjoy the splendour of the Florian Gate gothic tower and the adjoining fortified outpost of the Barbican.

There is a footpath that meanders around the whole of Planty park taking visitors around all the interesting gardens, monuments and close to the Vistula River at the southern border of the park.

Next to the Vistula River at the southern end of Planty Park you can also see the Wawel Castle and Wawel hill.

The park was started in the 1820’s when a green belt was formed where the medieval walls of the city once stood, the idea was to promote Krakow as a garden city. Over time the green belt was built on and renovated to give the beautiful cultivated gardens and the great footpath in the park today.

In the summer months there is nothing better than taking a stroll around Planty Park before settling on one of the many benches to watch as the world passes you by. In such a big city the park acts an oassis where people can come and escape the hustle and bustle around them.

You can also enjoy refreshments from the many small refreshment stalls found in the park on a hot summers day.

Samanid Mausoleum - Bukhara

The Samanid mausoleum, also known as the Tomb of Ismail or Ismail Samani Mausoleum, is a mausoleum that was erected in Bukhara, Uzbekistan in the late ninth century to the early tenth century.

The Samanid mausoleum was built by the ruler of the time called Samanid, hence its name, and construction started in 892 AD finishing fifty one year later.

Samanid was one of the last Persian rulers of the area as the Persian Empire started to fall apart, this makes the Samanid mausoleum an Islamic style architecture and a lasting reminder of how Uzbekistan became a mainly Islamic country.

Although it is believed the structure was initially built by Samanid for his father the body of his father is not housed there. There are three bodies within the mausoleum but only one is recognized by a wooden plaque bearing the name of Ismail’s grandson Nasr ibn Ahmad ibn Ismail or as-Said Nasr who died in 943 AD.

The building is built out of an ancient tradition where structures were made of baked brick, hence the colouration of the building.

The design of the mausoleum is that of a cube that tapers slightly to have a bigger base than the top. The top is then adorned with four small domes and one large dome. On all sides of the mausoleum and the dome above there are many intricate patterns showing the artistic detail of those that made it.

Tourism

Although tourism in Uzbekistan is still in its infancy with only around a quarter of a million tourists visiting every year one of the main reasons people visit is for its unique culture and history.

If you are ever to visit Uzbekistan then a visit to Bukhara to see the Samanid mausoleum is a must as it is truly a breathtaking sight that is sure to get your thinking about the past and the world around you.

Old Faithful Geyser - Yellowstone

There are many famous geysers found across the world but none as famous as Old Faithful in the United States, Yellowstone National Park.

Old Faithful is found in the Yellowstone National Park within the state of Wyoming and is a much loved natural formation by the people of the United States and this is why it is seen as a major attraction to visitors of Yellowstone National Park.

The geyser Old Faithful was the first of all the geysers in the national park to receive a name and was given its name on September 18th 1870 by an expedition called the Washburn-Langford-Doane expedition.

Part of the reason Old Faithful gets its name is because the geyser erupts usually without fail every sixty five minutes if the last eruption occurred for less than two and a half minutes or ever ninety one minutes if the last eruption was longer than two and a half minutes. The reason why the geyser can be almost clock work in its eruptions is because it has its own thermal feature and is not connected to the rest of the Upper Geyser Basin in the park.

When eruptions occur they can shoot over thirty one thousand litres (8,400 US Gallons) of boiling water up to fifty six metres in the air making it an inspiring and beautiful sight to behold.

Old Faithful isn’t the biggest or largest of the geysers in the park but as its name suggests it is the most predictable meaning visitors can be sure to see an eruption occur.

Its very common to see hundreds of visitors to Yellowstone National Park waiting for long periods just to catch one glimpse of the Old Faithful geyser erupting.

If you are visiting Yellowstone National Park then a visit to Old Faithful is a must as you are sure to be enthralled by this wonderful natural geyser.

Ruins of Carthage – Tunisia

Carthage (Arabic رطاج‎,) is an ancient city in Tunisia that dates back to the ninth century before Christ according to common legend although its exact date remains a mystery because any documents and records were destroyed by the Romans.

Today the ruins of Carthage stand as an ancient window into our past that is a major tourist attraction with many people visiting on a yearly basis to enjoy the splendour of this magnificent ancient city.

History of Carthage

The history of Carthage is a contentious point because of the problems associated with knowing its age and usage because the Roman Empire destroyed all known knowledge of its past before the 1st century AD.

Common legend tells us that a Queen Elissa (later in history to become Queen Dido) founded Carthage in 814 BC.

The story goes that Queen Elissa ruled a large metropolis and hundreds of surrounding settlements elsewhere with her husband the high priest. Queen Elissa’s brother was not happy and murdered her husband because he was not happy that the high Priest held more power than himself so Queen Elissa fled her lands and started a new city called Carthage.

To maintain the city and protect its borders as civilization flourished under Queen Elissa’s rule she employed foreign mercenaries from other areas of North Africa.

Carthage as a city fell in 146 BC to the hands of the Romans after three hard fought wars called the Punic Wars. During these wars the Romans suffered great losses to their army and naval forces but this did not stop them defeating the city of Carthage.

From what is understood the Romans pillaged the city of valuables and took all the civilians as slaves before burning the city to the ground leaving a city of ruins.

The Romans then took the land as part of the Roman Empire but did not rebuild the city until the second century AD.

In the fourth century AD Carthage became an important place of Christianity as it was an early centre of Christianity with the biblical canon of the Western Church being confirmed there in 397 AD.

After the Romans the Byzantine Empire enjoyed a short reign over the city before it finally came under Islamic rule in the 7th century. Under the Islamic rule of Hasan ibn al-Nu'man Carthage was again burned to the ground and Tunis was replaced as the most important city in the region.

Visiting Carthage

Although only ruins remain of Carthage it is still a much visited and much loved monument to Tunisia’s past and is a must to add to your travel itinerary if you are in the northern area of Tunisia.

Every year thousands of people from all areas of the globe descend on Carthage to view the beauty of the surrounding area, enjoy the mystery of this once great city, admire the ruins of the old city and generally enjoy a great day out.

Kiev Travel Guide

Kiev is the capital city of the Ukraine and is also one of Ukraine’s main tourist destinations for international visitors.

The tourism in Kiev is an all year affair. Many people travel to Kiev for short city breaks rather than longer holidays of a week or more. It is common for many travelers to visit Kiev for long weekends to enjoy the shopping or use the holiday as a romantic getaway.

Kiev is one of the most important cities in Eastern Europe because of its scientific and cultural understanding and also its location.

History

Kiev was founded in the 5th century when Slavic tribes arrived in the area from the east. These tribes lived in settlements until fortifications were built in the eight century by either the Slavs or the Khazars (history debates which it may be).

By the late ninth to early tenth century Kiev fell under the rule of the Varangians and the settlement grew into a huge population. This population thrived until 1240 when the Mongols invaded and completely destroyed Kiev causing a lot of the population to disperse.

By 1321 the city was taken by the Duchy of Lithuania and started to grow once again, although this was not the end of the city falling under the rule of foreign invaders. By the sixteenth century rule was taken over by the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth.

In the seventeenth century Kiev fell under the rule of the Russian Empire. After a while the importance of the city was realized by the Russians and Kiev started to grow into the large metropolis it is today.
